Nitrogen ground application
Very welcome moisture events over the last few days, with more on the way per the meteorological prognosticators, have greatly improved soil moisture conditions and should move soil moisture levels to a more favorable position. Please ensure your fall nitrogen management plans include informed application of your nitrogen investment.

Dry soil conditions significantly increase the risk of nitrogen loss when applying anhydrous ammonia in the fall. Anhydrous ammonia needs sufficient moisture to convert to ammonium and bind to soil particles. Without this, nitrogen may remain in a gaseous state, making it prone to escape. In extremely dry soils, nitrogen loss is heightened, especially if ammonia cannot adequately disperse and secure within the soil structure. Monitoring moisture levels and avoiding application during dry periods are crucial to optimize nitrogen retention and crop benefits.
