5 Quick Questions: Dan Ritter

BY DAIRYLAND SEED

For this next 5 Quick Questions feature, we’re staying in the eastern region to speak with Dairyland Seed Regional Agronomist Dan Ritter. Armed with a master’s degree in agronomy and experience as a Purdue University Weed Science Research Associate and an agricultural extension agent, Dan is ready to answer any of your agronomy questions.

How long has agriculture been a part of your life?

I have been in the agriculture industry my entire life, so I can claim 54 years of experience.

Why are you proud to be part of the ag industry?

The quality of people in our industry. As a whole, the ag industry is filled with some of the most honest, caring, genuine, hardworking folks you will find anywhere.

What are your key responsibilities as a Dairyland Seed agronomist?

My primary duties involve taking care of our seed friends by providing service, information and insight. This includes monitoring crop health and growth, collecting and analyzing data from our Dairyland Seed plot system to assist in proper seed placement and providing valuable and relevant information for efficient crop production.

What makes Dairyland Seed’s Agronomy team unlike any other?

The industry is filled with many sharp and talented agronomists. What sets apart our agronomy team is accessibility. We are ready to engage with growers at any time and we aren’t afraid to get dirt on our boots.

What one piece of harvest advice do you have for farmers?

Get it under a roof! We have little control over what happens while the crop is in the field. Once we get it in the bin, then we can manage what happens. So be diligent during harvest and with harvest timing. Scout fields regularly so you can plan to be at the fields at the prime time.

Harvest can be a stressful time. Make sure you set a plan, take regular breaks and contact your Dairyland Seed regional agronomist with any questions. Be safe and happy harvest!

His product portfolio activities deal with product life cycle management and the advancement process for all crops: determining product introductions, identifying products to drop from the lineup and estimating the lifeline of existing products in the portfolio. An added challenge includes ensuring adequate supply, allocations, and supply cuts. Following harvest, Ryan spends hours analyzing product data and, with guidance from Corteva and the agronomy team, makes decisions to determine which products are in the growth mode and which products should be phased out.
