Alfalfa Research

Led by Magnum V, the Dairyland lineup continues its unprecedented track record in state trials. Our focus has been on yield, and the track record shows that no one is as high yielding as Dairyland. Since 1977 our alfalfas have won over 200 state trials - 100 more than our closest competitor.

Magnum V Products

In addition to yield, we also consider the needs of today's hay grower. That's why we developed special alfalfas for special environments and special needs, enhancing productivity in those situations.

Farmers told us they needed to widen their window for harvesting high quality forage. As a result, after ten years of research, we released patented Sequential Maturity Alfalfa (our Forecast lineup). Plant an early maturity alfalfa on your fields where you believe you can get an extra cut or take an earlier cut. For those fields that you cannot get to quite as often or quite as quickly in the spring, use a late maturity alfalfa. This late maturity alfalfa will reach bud stage 3-5 days later than your standard medium maturity alfalfa, helping you obtain more milk-producing high quality forage.

Farmers told us they needed special alfalfas for unique field considerations. We spent years of effort to identify highly productive germ plasm for those environments, resulting in the release of our branch-rooted Magnum-Wet products and our sunken-crown MagnaGraze alfalfa. Thanks to the unique genetic makeup of these products, farmers can now benefit from more productivity on their saturated soils, grazed fields and areas of high equipment traffic.

Our non-hardy alfalfa efforts continue to pay off with the release of both semi-dormant and non-dormant products (known as the "Magna" lineup). These alfalfas are rapidly gaining in popularity in areas of the west, south and southwest, as well as around the world.

msSunstraŽ Hybrid Alfalfa Technology is an exciting breakthrough in alfalfa plant breeding. It is the patented breeding process that maximizes the yield potential of superior alfalfa germ plasm through analyzing the specific combining ability of elite lines and maintaining the hybrid yield of those elite lines all the way through to the commercial product. The hybrid yield that results is similar to what was captured through the process of hybridization of corn in the 20th Century.

HybriForceŽ-400 is the world's first hybrid alfalfa and is a breakthrough product as it significantly increases yields over current alfalfas. After 24 years of intense research effort and an incredible financial commitment of 15% of revenues devoted to plant breeding, hybrid alfalfa has finally arrived. Recently Dairyland announced the release of its second hybrid alfalfa, HybriForceŽ-420/Wet, a branch-rooted hybrid designed for saturated soils.

Soybean Research

The proprietary DSR soybean breeding enjoys premier status in the industry & deservedly so.

For example, we were the first to release herbicide tolerant soybeans in Maturity Groups I, II and III. (A larger company released one product at the same time we released our three. Their product lasted one year. All three of ours lasted at least five years.)

We were also the first to break the 70 bushel per acre yield mark in University trials with herbicide tolerant soybeans. We were the first to break 80 in University trials. And in 1998 we became the first to break the 90 bushel per acre mark with DSR-293/RR in an Ohio State University trial.

Our lineup includes cyst resistant products from Group I through Group III, many including herbicide tolerance as well.

State trial records show that our DSR lineup has produced 1,442 "Top 10" finishes in the 90's, 245 of them with our herbicide tolerant products (some companies won't even enter theirs.

Currently we are recognized for our high-yielding STS tolerant soybeans, as well as our high yielding Roundup Ready and conventional DSR's such as DSR-218 that yielded 96 bu/a. in a 1998 MSU trial.

Hybrid Corn Research

When evaluating seed choices, our track record in the development of proprietary corn genetics should be taken seriously. Our plant breeders have a singular focus - yield. It has been one of our most dynamic areas of research growth for the past ten years. Our efforts are paying off.

Soybean, Corn & Magnum Products

Through the dedicated efforts of our research staff, we continue to develop high yielding lines. We have also developed proprietary genetics featuring natural corn borer tolerance as well as genetics with superior silage traits known as HiD.F. (Highly Digestible Forage) hybrids.

Our GENI strip plot cooperators play an integral role in on-farm testing of elite experimental genetics. Many were released as new hybrids in 2001. As a result of these combined efforts, the Dairyland Stealth lineup has captured 799 "Top 10" finishes in University trials since 1995.
